Confined in cages or Schonbrunn Gold Hofburg, Empress Elisabeth suffered the loss of two of his four children, the rejection of his political family and the consequent changes in health than the court led to pressure on it. Despite all this gave her husband a great political gift, the crown of Hungary, won thanks to his diplomatic skills and his love for those distant lands.

Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie von Wittelsbach was the fourth daughter of the Duke of Bavaria Maximilian and Ludovica. A decisive journey
In 1853, Elisabeth was traveling with his mother and sister Elena to the summer residence of the Austrian imperial family had in the town of Bad Ischl close to Salzburg. Ludovica was the sister of Archduchess Sophie, queen mother of the Hapsburg Empire. His son, Emperor Franz Joseph I should choose a wife and the choice had fallen on Elisabeth's sister, Elena. Elisabeth was not too time to think about this new situation. A year later, in 1854, married his cousin in the Augustinian Church in Vienna. He left behind a life of freedom and happiness and had to face one of the tougher cuts of old Europe.

Neither her aunt Sophia and the ladies of the court helped the little princess to adapt to his new role as future empress. The pressure took its toll on Elisabeth who soon began to suffer from eating disorders and dangerous deterioration of health for all to see because of its extreme thinness.

Mother void
Motherhood gave no respite to the unfortunate Elisabeth. The continuing dispute with his mother by the model of education that their daughters should receive Gisela Sofia and took her to commit the imprudence of taking them with her in one of his trips to Hungary. The death of his eldest daughter a high fever caused by the Empress sank into a deep depression.

Despite their total failure to adapt to life at court, Elizabeth tried to be beside her husband, unloved emperor, staunch advocate of centralism and absolutism in Europe, a Europe of liberal revolutions, which required new air to their rulers.

One of the biggest hits of the reign of Francis Joseph, full of confrontation, conflict and loss of territory, was the binding rule of Hungary. Love for those lands and the diplomatic skills of the Empress took the Hungarian crown to the head of her husband.

Tragic end
Elisabeth spent much of his later years traveling, a passion that inherited from his father. By land and sea, the Empress visited the Mediterranean and many European cities long hidden behind an umbrella or a veil, and with mourning as a companion. The relationship with her husband had long had cooled and had become a respectful friendship. Elisabeth came to encourage and consent to the relationship with her lover Franz Joseph Katharina Schratt, whom they both knew as friends .

In one of his many trips, the Empress was killed in Geneva by the hand of an anarchist who had planned to kill another victim. On September 10, 1898, the anarchist Luigi Italian Lucheni decided to end the life of Elisabeth in the absence of a French prince who had planned to kill. Pretending to stumble, Luigi stabbed in the heart of the Empress of an accurate and deadly blow a stylus. Elisabeth stood up and continued walking towards the ship docked at Lake Lemans to which he was about to embark. Once at the top of the boat noticed the coup, became dizzy and fainted. The Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary died shortly after.

His body was transported with solemn respect and pomp to the Imperial Crypt in Vienna, to be buried beside his beloved son, Rodolfo.
